Job Description

The Environmental and Social Safeguard Specialist for Disaster Preparedness will be responsible for ensuring that all disaster preparedness initiatives adhere to environmental and social safeguards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental management, social impact assessment, and risk mitigation strategies. He or she should be able to mainstream and follow the issues related to Environment and social within the project.

Requirements

In close coordination with DP-Project manager and DP- Project Coordinator develop and implement environmental and social safeguard frameworks in accordance with national regulations and international best practices.
In close coordination with field staff conduct environmental and social impact assessments to identify potential risks, impacts, and mitigation measures related to project activities.
In close coordination with DP-Project manager and DP- Project Coordinator design and implement monitoring plans for environmental and social indicators, utilizing tools such as checklists and field surveys.
The Environmental and Social Safeguard Specialist makes sure the development and implementation of an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for the project, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, social safeguards, and community engagement principles. This includes conducting environmental and social impact assessments, identifying mitigation measures, and monitoring the implementation of environmental and social management activities throughout the project lifecycle.
Assess the potential environmental impacts of project activities and develop mitigation strategies, including waste management and biodiversity conservation plans.
Evaluate the social implications of project interventions, ensuring respect for community rights and cultural heritage.
Monitor project activities to ensure compliance with safeguard principles throughout the project lifecycle, conducting site visits and inspections.
Analyze data from monitoring activities to assess the effectiveness of safeguard measures and recommend improvements as needed.
Provide training and support to project staff and local partners on environmental and social safeguard principles and practices.
In close coordination with DP-Project manager and DP- Project Coordinator develop educational materials and conduct workshops to raise awareness among community members about environmental protection and social responsibilities related to disaster preparedness.
In close coordination with field staff facilitate consultations with local communities and stakeholders to address environmental and social concerns, ensuring their voices are heard in project planning.
Establish feedback mechanisms for community members to report environmental and social issues related to the project.
Prepare regular reports on safeguard compliance, including findings from assessments, community consultations, and monitoring activities.
Document lessons learned and best practices to inform future projects and enhance organizational knowledge.
When instructed participate represent DACAAR in external meetings/ workshops and other relevant activities.
The Environmental and Social Safeguard Specialist must follow the organization existing security policies, procedures and daily instructions of the safety personnel.
Any other tasks are given by the Supervisor.
